One in Six Connected Adults Use Windows XP On Their Primary Home PC

On April 8th, 2014, Microsoft will discontinue extended support for Windows XP. There is a substantial installed base of Home-owned Windows XP PCs being actively used in the U.S.

These users are not just a handful of stragglers, hanging on to get the last nickel of value from their old, tired PCs. In fact, they are active users of a wide variety of tech products and also big spenders on digital media, tech services, and consumer electronics.

Based on the latest research from MetaFacts, one in six (17%) Connected US Adults are using a Windows XP Home PC as their primary PC. Just over one-fifth (21%) of Connected US Adults are using a Windows XP Home PC as their primary or other connected Home PC.

Although the Windows XP Operating System was released in 2001, it continues to remain in active use following the release of more than one version of Microsoft Windows.

Home XP PC users are regularly using their PCs for a wide range of activities, and most are using other PCs, Smartphones, Tablets, and other connected devices in addition to their Windows XP Home PC. The full TUP research details the demographics, behavioral, and tech usage profile characteristics which uniquely differentiate this market segment.

These results are based on the most recent wave of Technology User Profile, the TUP 2013 edition. The large-scale survey is in its 31st continuous year, documenting and detailing the full scope of technology adoption and use.

For this analysis, two types of Home Windows XP PC-using adults were defined: “Any Windows XP Home PC” which are those adults who use a Home-owned Windows XP PC as any of their connected devices and “Home PC #1 – Operating System Version” which are those individuals who use a Home-owned Windows XP PC as their primary PC (the PC which they use the most often).

An active connected device is defined in TUP as one which has been connected to the Internet to check email or to open an Internet browser in the prior 90 days.

In addition to tracking the operating system of actively used connected devices, Technology User Profile details the many devices which online adults use to regularly connect to the Internet. The survey-based research details what people do with their devices, where they spend their technology dollars, and how often they update (or don’t updated) their technology products.

Software developers can create the most incredible applications, but will people want them? With Microsoft’s newest upgrade to the Windows operating system, the first question PC vendors and software developers alike ask is how soon users will upgrade. Or, will they wait until they buy their next PC?

Behavior and intention are two strong indicators to start with. As part of Technology User Profile, MetaFacts asked over 30,889 PC users around the world about their plans to upgrade their operating system. We also asked them whether they acquired their previous operating system with their computer or separately.

Three of the five BRIC-M countries: Brazil, Russia, and India’s Upper Urbanites ranked highest in what they say they want to do and what they’ve done in the past. Nearly half of the Russian online adults we surveyed acquired their last operating system separately from their PC, as did over a third of Brazilian online adults and nearly a third of India’s Upper Urbanites. This has as much to do with the weakness of major PC brands in these countries as it has to do with the economics of buying and using PCs.

Piracy is potentially an issue as well, since in two of these three regions, one-fifth or more agreed that it’s acceptable to use unlicensed software at home or in the workplace.

Three additional countries worthy of note as potentially strongest markets for the Windows 7 upgrade: the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Germany, and China’s Urbanites. Each of these countries is ranked in the top five in either their OS purchase plans or past upgrading experience.

Some of Microsoft’s strongest markets – the UK, US, France, Netherlands, and Japan – are at the bottom of the list when ranked by intention and behavior. It may be that these seasoned PC veterans – 25% or more of whom who have used a PC for 13 or more years – have been through enough versions of Windows to have them wait and see.

To answer these and many other questions, MetaFacts conducted its 27th wave of Technology User Profile, surveying over 45,000 online and offline adults in 16 countries for its Global Insights Edition. The multi-modal multi-phase study was conducted using a careful combination of offline and online methods.

I expect the first wave of Windows upgraders to come from Germany, Australia, Spain, and Italy, taking these and other factors into account. These will be followed by the UK, the US, and France. After that, the newest crop of notebooks from HP and Dell are the most likely direction users will go to enjoy this newest Windows version.

Operating systems by mobile PC brand

‘Coopetition’ and ‘frenemy’ are clumsy words to describe the relationship such as that between Microsoft and PC makers. Depending on your role in the industry, you might choose one of the terms from biology such as commensal, mutualist, or parasitic. Whichever term you use, the reality is that during major changes such as a new operating system release, to avoid wholesale market confusion and bringing buying to a standstill, there is a great interdependence between Microsoft and PC makers. As Microsoft launched Windows Vista, PC makers made various choices about how aggressively they were willing to tout the newest operating system and negotiate the best position, all while still keeping buyer’s interest strong. Market adoption is never an overnight event, and with a large installed base, adoption takes even longer. During this particular transition, early anecdotal reports of incompatibility and incomplete support and drivers added to delayed adoption by many market segments. Consequently, some PC makers continued to emphasize Windows XP and offer it longer than other makers.

Dell, in particular, offered XP well after the release of Vista, and their installed base reflects that. The majority (83%) of Dell mobile PCs are running Windows XP. By stark comparison, Vista is on closer to 40% of mobile PCs from HP, Toshiba, and Sony.

Operating systems and mobility

Windows Vista has a stronger presence on mobile PCs than on desktop PCs. Over one-fourth (27%) of mobile PCs have Windows Vista, almost double the 14% share of desktops. This mostly reflects that mobile PCs are newer than most desktops, and that the majority of new computers are bought with pre-installed operating systems. Vista’s relative strength on mobiles is apparently not because of any benefits in Vista inherent to mobility, based on analysis of the activities for Vista mobile PCs compared with XP mobile PCs. The largest difference in activities is watching movies on DVD, a regular activity on over half (52%) of Vista mobile PCs and on just over one-third (36%) of XP PCs. This can be attributed in large part to the larger and clearer displays of newer notebooks, and less to anything in Vista itself.

The reality is that Windows XP is the dominant operating system on mobiles as well as desktops. Nearly two-thirds (64%) of mobile PCs use XP, a smaller share than the three-fourths (78%) of desktops.

Apple’s focus on mobile computing has sustained its position. Almost one-tenth (9%) of mobile PCs run the Apple OS, more than double Apple’s 4% share on desktops. Apple has pioneered several mobility capabilities in its operating system and bundled software, with products & services such as MobileMe. This software helps synchronize calendars, contacts, and email across multiple portable devices, which are the sort of the services most-heavily utilized by highly-mobile users.

Apple’s retail footprint – success and failure

Apple’s own stores are heavily visited by its own Apple home PC customers. Of all the retail outlets that Apple households have recently shopped or purchased in, Apple’s retail stores rank #4. One-third (33%) of Apple households report recently shopping in or purchasing from an Apple retail store. When including Apple’s online store, this number rises to 43%, ranking it also fourth among most-frequented outlets.

Where else are you more likely to run into Apple-owning shoppers? They are more likely than non-Apple households to be found shopping in a Target store than a Wal-Mart store.

  •  Target – 49% of Apple households vs. 43% for non-Apple households
  •  Wal-Mart – 48% of Apple households vs. 62% for non-Apple households

They’re also more prevalent in book stores:

  • Barnes & Noble – 30% of Apple households vs. 21% for non-Apple households
  • Borders – 25% of Apple households vs. 14% for non-Apple households

Interestingly, although Apple households are active shoppers, tech-savvy, and very comfortable and facile online, they aren’t shopping at significantly more online outlets than non-Apple households. They do actively shop online, however. Nearly three-fourths (71%) of Apple households have recently shopped or purchased online, compared with nearly two-thirds (64%) of non-Apple Households. More of Apple’s shoppers frequent eBay than Apple’s own online store. The #2-ranked destination for Apple households is eBay, having recently attracted just over one-third (34%) of Apple households. Apple’s online store pulled in just under a quarter (24%) of these Apple owners.

Since non-Apple households outnumber Apple households 94% to 6%, if all else was equal, it could be expected that non-Apple shoppers would frequent Apple’s retail or online stores in similar ratios. That may be Apple’s grand desire, but at this time Apple’s customers have a significantly higher share of their ranks visiting Apple retail stores than their national shares might indicate. This could be looked at as a strong reflection of Apple’s customer loyalty and interest in special programs and services Apple offers in these stores. Alternatively, it could be looked at as some failing on Apple’s part to get wider distribution of its products.

Even more interesting, and positive for Apple, is the remarkably high share of non-Apple households that shop in and buy from Apple’s retail stores. Nearly two-thirds (64%) of Apple’s retail shoppers do not have an Apple PC in their household. Also of interest: 4.6 million non-Apple households shop or buy on Apple’s online site, which is nearly identical to Apple’s entire Home PC customer base of 4.5 million households. This is a testament to Apple’s success in driving tire-kickers and concerned Windows XP users and Vista candidates into its stores, as well as customers for its non-PC products, the iPhone & iPod in particular. These high numbers are also a strong and positive indicator of future potential growth for Apple.

Beyond everyday consumables and consumer electronics, Apple owners are somewhat unique in where they buy PC-related products. Apple’s own stores are among the top 5 shopping choices among Apple owners, at 13 times the rate of non-Apple owners, even though Sony has a retail presence. Historically, IBM, Gateway, and even Dell have operated their own company-owned outlets and kiosks. These haven’t drawn anywhere near the dedicated attention Apple commands. This is due in part to Apple’s unique and proprietary products, so buyers benefit in being able to get otherwise hard-to-find products. Also, with Apple’s strong brand loyalty, Apple buyers have other reasons to frequent the stores, from their specialized Genius Bar support to Apple-specific training.

With the exception of Apple’s own stores, the top 5 types of outlets Apple households frequent are the same as those shopped by non-Apple households. There is a wide gap between Apple and non-Apple buyers among discount stores, notably Wal-Mart. For more than one reason, Wal-Mart is less frequented by the Apple crowd: the demographics skew in opposite directions, Wal-Mart doesn’t carry the wealth of Apple-specific products found in other outlets, and in many cases, Wal-Mart is located in other regions, states, and neighborhoods than Apple stores.
