Hold the phone – PCs rebound for communication among one segment (MetaFAQs)

None do, although one segment shows a counter trend. Mobile phones – especially Smartphones – are the primary communications devices for all age/employment segments. This has been a growing trend for the last several years, and 2014 marked the last year the PC was king for communications among any segment. In 2015, the last group to focus on mobile phones for their spoken, visual, and written communications activities was the segment of adults age 50 and above and who are not employed.

However, one segment has made a reversal of that phone-only trend. Employed adults age 18-39 have started to increase their use of PCs as their primary communications device. While mobile phones still lead, this shift may be surprising to some.

Looking more deeply into what this segment is doing by drilling down into the TUP activities data by device type, two activities stand out. Young employed adults are increasingly making web-based group meetings and video calls. To be clear, the PC has not returned to primacy for communication among younger employed adults. However, collaboration has sparked some renewed life in the old workhorse.

Are Hearables-Users Broader Communicators? (MetaFAQs)

Does it automatically follow that Bluetooth Headset users would be using more ways to communicate than others? Or might they be so delighted with voice communications that they forego texting or even emailing?

What is the profile of the most-active communicators? (MetaFAQs)

The generation gap is often attributed to communication differences. Although often chalked up to the choice of words – slang, symbols, or even emoji – there are also differences in the mode of communication.

More than a few frustrated parents have found their voicemail messages ignored and learned that text messaging may be the best way to stay in touch with their children.

In fact, the most-active communicators are age 18-34. These use the broadest assortment of communication activities across their connected devices. Over half of the top-third in communication activity breadth are age 18-34.

How many users make video phone calls using a Tablet? (MetaFAQs)

Video phone calls are ideal when you want to see someone while you’re talking. The larger screens help you see more clearly. At the same time, many phone callers enjoy being mobile, so they can make or take calls when they like. Others enjoy relaxing in a couch or easy chair during calls, which may not be as easy while using a typical desktop PC.

Also, like a Goldilocks story, Smartphone screens are too small, Desktop screens big enough yet not mobile enough, and tablets are just right.

That’s at least part of the calculus for the 18.2 million adults who regularly make personal video phone calls using a Tablet, and 10 million who do so for work video calls.

What are the primary devices used for each category of activity? (MetaFAQs)

Smartphones are now the dominant device, although only slightly. In active use by 65% of Connected Adults, Tower Desktop PCs have effectively equal penetration at 64%. Notebook PCs aren’t far behind at 53%.

Interestingly, Smartphones are only the primary device for one type of activity – Communication. Even though Communication activities of one kind or another are being use by effectively all (99%) Connected Adults, it’s the only category of activities for which the Smartphone is the preferred device. For nearly every other type of activity, Tower Desktop PCs are the preferred device.

Among adults that use any Connected Device for Communication activities, 31% prefer to use a Smartphone, 12% prefer to use a Tower Desktop PC, and 6% prefer to use a Notebook PC. Communication activities includes voice calls, video calls, emails, chats and other forms.
