Samsung has recently had disastrous problems with their Smartphone batteries, with the Galaxy Note 7. This isn’t the first time that any brands’ Smartphone batteries have had problems, and hopefully for everyone concerned it will be the last.

Even before this happened, our TUP 2016 survey found that many Samsung smartphone users were planning to make a big switch. A higher share of Samsung Smartphone users with purchase plans plan to acquire an Apple iPhone than iPhone users that plan to buy an Android Smartphone from any maker. Also, a higher share of Samsung Smartphone users are undecided about the brand or OS of their upcoming Smartphone acquisition.Smartphone Purchase Plans

These Smartphone purchase plans follow a similar longer-term trend we’ve noted as users migrate towards devices with the same OS Ecosystem, whether that be Apple, Google, or Windows. In part, Apple’s iPad has brought Android and Windows into the fold.

Are headset wearers bigger tech spenders? (MetaFAQs)

How many users make video phone calls using a Tablet? (MetaFAQs)

Video phone calls are ideal when you want to see someone while you’re talking. The larger screens help you see more clearly. At the same time, many phone callers enjoy being mobile, so they can make or take calls when they like. Others enjoy relaxing in a couch or easy chair during calls, which may not be as easy while using a typical desktop PC.

Also, like a Goldilocks story, Smartphone screens are too small, Desktop screens big enough yet not mobile enough, and tablets are just right.

That’s at least part of the calculus for the 18.2 million adults who regularly make personal video phone calls using a Tablet, and 10 million who do so for work video calls.

How many Android Smartphone users plan to buy an Apple iPhone? (MetaFAQs)

Inertia is a major factor among consumers, with many staying out of habit, comfort, or their perceived cost of switching. While many stay with the adage, “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”, others seek to try something new. With each new product release, competitors actively seek to win (or win back) customers either with competitive moves or disruptive technology.

In the Smartphone market, one closely-watched metric is the movement from one ecosystem to another. Are subscribers staying within their existing operating system or brand family, or are they defecting and making a switch?

Android Smartphone Users Planning an iPhone MetaFAQ mq0025Based on the most recent wave of TUP, 5% of Android Smartphone users have plans to acquire an Apple iPhone within the next 12 months. This is a small percentage and yet is on par with the share of iPhone users who are planning to move to an Android Smartphone.

Fortunately for Apple, a similar share of Windows Smartphone users also plan to purchase an iPhone.

More importantly, Apple’s customers plan to stay loyal. The share of current iPhone users planning to acquire another iPhone is substantially higher, nearly six times higher.
